Class Dojo
Class Dojo is a website that can be used for communication with parents, classroom management, attendance and a number of other things. Class Dojo allows students to create a personal avatar once they have shared a code with their parents, allowing their parents to view their progress. Throughout the week, students may gain or lose "dojo points" based on behavior, preparedness, actions towards others, and anything else the teacher may want to track. As points are awarded or deducted, the program logs the information to be shared with parents at the end of the week. In addition to the dojo point information, the teacher may also communicate with parents through a built-in messaging system. Over the course of the semester, I have had parents communicate with me through Class Dojo allowing for authentic communication between school and home.
Another way that I use Class Dojo is for attendance. Every morning, as part of students' morning routine, students will "check in" by clicking on their avatar, which then turns green showing that they are present. This gives students a focus as they come in as well as a quick check of which students are present and which are absent.
One way that I think Class Dojo is exceptional is that it can be personalized to each classroom. It gives the teacher freedom to add or remove behaviors he or she would like to track. For example, if a teacher would like to track homework completion, she may add this as a feedback item. In addition, teachers may each decide on the reward given from a certain number of dojo points. Teachers have the freedom to reset the points to zero at any time and start again.
Class Dojo is compatible with tablets and iPads as well as on the computer. This allows the flexibility to bring the Class Dojo system to library or another event just by bringing the iPad along.
